Students from the Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy Chapter are attending the Louisiana HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) State Leadership Conference in Lafayette, Louisiana from March 9th-March 11th. Fifteen 8th and 9th graders will be connecting with other HOSA Chapters throughout the state in workshops and many other events.

Some of the workshops offered include:

  • Discussion about the myths surrounding bone marrow donation and how marrow donations actually take place
  • The importance of reporting concussions and head injuries in athletics
  • NAMI and mental illness awareness
  • Forensic Medicine
  • Information about AHC (Alternating Hemoplegia Childhood)
  • The future of Nursing
  • Epidemiology - Simulated Gastroenteritis Outbreak Investigation
  • Q and A session with local EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians) and Paramedics
  • Fire Science
  • What it is like to be a labor and delivery nurse

Many students will be competing in the following event areas:

  • Health Science Events (such as Medical Terminology)
  • Emergency Preparedness Events (such as First Aid and Public Health)
  • Teamwork Events (such as Health Careers, Forensic Medicine, Biomedical Debate and Health Education)
  • Leadership Events (such as Healthy Lifestyle, Health Career Photography, Writing and Public Speaking)
  • Health Professions Events (such as Nursing and Biomedical Laboratory Science)

Gabby Hoffman, a 7th grader in the SCOPE program at Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy, was awarded the first place designation for pin design, and her pin design was chosen for the 2017 Louisiana HOSA pin:


Shaiza Abbas, a 9th grader in the SCOPE program at Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy, was awarded the first place designation for t-shirt design, and her t-shirt design was chosen for the 2017 Louisiana HOSA shirt:
