Dear Discovery Parents:

As you know, our community and world are currently facing a health crisis with the global outbreak of COVID-19. For weeks, Discovery administration has been preparing a response to this threat with the goal of keeping our community safe while also allowing our students to continue their education. In keeping with the recommendations of public health officials worldwide, we are acting to reduce the concentration of people on campus and the number of gatherings. We have decided to close campuses effective today and transition to online learning as of March 19, 2020. While preparing this message, Governor John Bel Edwards announced the closure of ALL K-12 schools statewide for 4 weeks. Our plan is outlined below.

PLAN

  • All classes are cancelled March 16-18 for online course preparations.

  • We intend to move to online based learning starting Thursday, March 19, 2020 with plans going out to families on Wednesday.

  • We will send families a Google Form to assess internet and/or device needs.

EVENTS

All gatherings, events, and activities will be postponed or cancelled immediately. This includes:

  • Health Fair, March 21

  • The Ribbon Cutting, March 26

  • The Discovery Bash Gala, March 28

  • All athletic practices and games

We hope to hold Graduation as scheduled on May 20, 2020, but this is subject to change given potential public health recommendations.

As we all work together to brave this pandemic, we should remember our HEART tenants. We must be socially responsible and practice social distancing whenever possible. This is a stressful and troublesome time for our community, but I know we will work through this difficult time.

On a daily basis, I witness the endurance of our students, administration team, and faculty and even more so during challenging times.  I appreciate and admire our administrative team and faculty working tirelessly to support our school community, continue our mission of educating students, and keep us all safe.

With HEART,

Dr. Glaser

SCHOOL SPONSORED EVENTS/PERFORMANCES/ATHLETICS

We understand that there is a lot of uncertainty regarding future events at Discovery schools, including but not limited to our first ever KDHSA graduation and prom, stepping up ceremony, pinning ceremony, artistic performances, and athletics. We do not know what the next weeks and months will bring, but we do know our Seniors will walk across a stage at some point. It may be a different date, but it will happen. An integral part of the Discovery culture is to celebrate the accomplishments of our students from K-12th grade. That remains a priority to us. We will make these celebrations happen in some manner at some location on some date in the future.

COVID-19 ILLNESS REPORTING

We are asking all members of our community to communicate any confirmed COVID-19 related illnesses to us so that we can best assess the impact on our school, and how that relates to safely returning to campus. Please report these cases to our school nurse, Olivia Todaro, [email protected]

We look forward to working with you closely as we journey together into distance learning. Don’t forget to practice social distancing, get outside, and do one thing daily that makes you feel good. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or concerns.
