WHAT IS A CHARTER SCHOOL?

A charter school is an independently run public school. Charter schools are granted greater flexibility in their operations. In return for this flexibility charter schools are expected to perform at a higher level of standard on both test scores and graduation rates.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?

Any Jefferson Parish resident is eligible to apply for admission. Jefferson Parish residency is required to remain enrolled.

Students must be 5 years of age by September 30th to be eligible for Kindergarten.

The PreK 4 application is separate and only Discovery faculty and dependents of qualifying Ochsner employees are eligible to apply for this tuition-based program.

DO YOU TEST TO GAIN ADMISSION?

No. Discovery schools are open-enrollment schools and do not require testing to gain admission.

IS THERE A COST TO ATTEND YOUR SCHOOL?

Discovery Schools are tuition-free, like all public schools.

WHAT IS THE STUDENT-TEACHER RATIO AT DISCOVERY SCHOOLS?

The average class size is approximately 26 students.

MY CHILD HAS AN IEP, OR RECEIVES SPECIAL SERVICES; CAN YOU ACCOMMODATE HIS/HER NEEDS?

Yes. We accommodate all children and their individual learning needs.

DO YOU PROVIDE TRANSPORTATION?

Parents are encouraged to drop-off and pick-up their child on a daily basis. Limited transportation service is provided by Discovery Schools. 

For students attending DJOD, bus transportation is available for those in the neighborhood preference area and Harahan. Additional transportation hubs (designated pick-up and drop-off locations) are located at Trenton & Kingman (near Clearview Mall) for Metairie residents and at the Dollar General on Bridge City Ave for Westbank Residents. This is subject to change year to year as we try to accommodate community demand and improve transportation efficiency.
