Dear parents/guardians,
The Kenner Discovery administration along with the City of Kenner, elected officials and contractors have made every effort to begin school as planned for the high school. However, the extreme weather conditions have caused a delay in completing the construction project. The final step of completing electrical connections has been a challenge due to the local weather conditions and the need in Houston.
The start date for high school is now Monday, September 11, 2017. Rather than extending the school year into June, the high school will add 2 days to the week of Thanksgiving break (November 20 & 21) and add 2 days to the winter break (December 18 & 19). Build-A-Classroom day is postponed to Saturday, September 9th. New Student Orientation and Book Day are still scheduled on Friday, September 1st. We appreciate your patience and flexibility throughout the building process.

College Shirt Day Friday, September 1, 2017
KDHSA Families:
On Friday, September 1, 2017, students are allowed to wear any college or university shirt along with their regular uniform bottom. The shirt can be worn over the uniform jumper. (NO tank tops, spaghetti straps, or sleeveless shirts are allowed.) PreK/K girls only are allowed to wear PE shorts with the shirt.

KDHSA 5th - 8th Grade Back to School Night
Middle School Families:
The Middle School TEAM would like to invite you to our Back to School Night for students in grades 5th - 8th on Thursday, September 7, 2017 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. If your child is in Reading or Math Intervention, there will be a Title I/Intervention meeting from 8:00pm to 8:30pm.

Swamp Owl Garden Assistance:
Ms. Oliveri and Mrs. Andre' are in search of some helping hands to beautify the school garden. Our Swamp Owl Garden is used throughout the year by the Garden Club and multiple science classes. Ms. Oliveri received some amazing grant supplies over the summer, and we would appreciate assistance in building garden beds, putting out dirt, weeding, and building the compost bins. If you are available to donate your time on Wednesday, September 6 from 4:15-6:15, please contact Mrs. Andre' at andre.cardinale@discoveryhsf.org to volunteer. We kindly ask that only adults participate.

Tropical Storm Message
KDHSA Families:
We are monitoring Tropical Storm Harvey along with local and state emergency officials. We will continue to operate normally on Tuesday, August 29th with no cancellations at this time. Decisions will be made on a day-to-day basis throughout this weather event.
Our HEARTs are with the citizens of Texas as they face devastating flood waters and weather reminiscent of the Flood of 2016. Our Support TEAM will be available should our students or employees need any anxiety-related support.

Below you can find a list of the various stations at Book Day as well as suggested times for your student. In order to keep the lines to a minimum, please adhere as close as possible to the times listed. If you have a child in both 9th and 10th grades, you may choose either of the time slots listed.
Times are open house style, so you may arrive any time within the 45 minute span.

4th-8th Grade Families-LEAP RESULTS
Tomorrow, 8/23, we will send home your child’s ELA LEAP 2025 Student Report and Math LEAP 2025 Student Report (2017 Results). Additionally, we have included a Parent Guide to assist in understanding the scores and all of the components of the report.
Please be on the lookout for a large brown envelope. Sign and return this envelope to your child’s homeroom teacher by Monday, 8/28 --please keep the copies of your child’s LEAP Reports. We will use this envelope to send home Social Studies LEAP Student Reports (Early Fall) and future LEAP Reports.
